PRESS RELEASE: DNA Match Clears Robbery Investigation

On January 25, 2021, Turlock Police investigated a robbery that occurred at the Bank of the West in the 2100 block of Fulkerth Road. This investigation involved a male suspect driving a gray BMW sedan. The suspect parked the BMW near a bank ATM machine, which was being used by an elderly female.

The driver of the BMW approached the female, threw her to the ground and took cash from her hand along with her purse. The man fled in the BMW and struck another female, who was attempting to intervene. That female was knocked to the ground by the vehicle and sustained moderate, non-life-threatening injuries.

Three tips were received from the public after the case was profiled on Crime Stoppers. One of the tips directed Detectives to the location of the BMW, parked in the city of Turlock. The vehicle was processed and evidence of the crime was found inside. Evidence was submitted to the Department of Justice for DNA processing with hopes of obtaining a positive identification of the suspect.

In March of 2023, a DNA match confirmed the identity of the suspect. Over two years after the original crime, with this DNA match, Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for 44 year-old, Turlock resident, Francisco Ibarra Jr. for robbery, elder abuse and hit & run causing injuries.

On March 16, 2023, at approximately 12:14 p.m., Turlock Police officers spotted Ibarra in the 800 block of Ashton Court. Ibarra was arrested and taken into custody without incident. Ibarra was transported to the Turlock Police Department for an interview. After Ibarra was interviewed, he was transported and booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on the warrant. He remains in custody with a $150,000 bail.

Detective Jason Tosta said, “With the assistance of the Department of Justice, the residents who provided the tips, and the use of modern technology, we were finally able to bring this criminal to justice. I hope the arrest of Ibarra will bring some sort of closure to the victims in this case for all they had to endure. Staff is committed to solving crimes such as these and holding criminals accountable for their actions, no matter how long it takes.”
